The midfielder has had a season to forget for Manchester United.

Casemiro’s nightmare Manchester United campaign has taken a new low with the midfielder dropped by Brazil for this summer’s Copa America.

The 32-year-old’s form has taken a nosedive this season in a dysfunctional United side, and Casemiro’s torturous 2023/24 reached a new nadir on Monday with a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The former Real Madrid star played at centre-back and looked totally off the pace and he was at fault for at least two of the goals. It led to pundit Jamie Carragher claiming Casemiro is finished at top-level football.

“He should be thinking ‘I need to go to the MLS or Saudi’,” the ex-defender said on Sky Sports. “I'm deadly serious. He's ageing, the people around him they need to tell him this has to stop.”

But that verdict is only strengthened by Brazil manager Dorival Junior’s decision to omit Casemiro from this summer squad. United’s no.18 has earned 75 senior caps and last played for the five-time world champions in October.

Casemiro is not the only experienced Premier League star to be left out, with Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus also a notable absentee, while injury has prevented Richarlison from being included. Alisson, Gabriel, Andreas Pereira, Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz, Joao Gomes, Lucas Paqueta and Gabriel Martinelli have been selected by Brazil, who are aiming to win the competition for a 10th time.

The Selecao have been drawn in a group with Costa Rica, Paraguay and Colombia, with the tournament, which is being held in the USA, set to begin on 21 June.
