Fernandes put pen to paper on a new deal which will run until June 2026, and has become a fan favourite at the club since his arrival from Sporting in January 2020.

The 27-year-old has made 117 appearances for United in this time, scoring 49 goals and assisting his teammates on 39 occasions.

Fernandes wears the no.18 shirt at the Red Devils, but eventually wants to wear the no.8, which is currently occupied by Juan Mata.

He tweeted: “I hope to get it one day... but for now I hope to have my brother Juan Mata close to me.”

The no.8 shirt could be up for grabs as soon as next season, with Mata’s contract set to expire at the end of the campaign and no talks of a renewal are currently being reported.

Mata joined United from Chelsea in 2014 and has featured 278 times for the club, netting 51 goals and assisting his teammates on 47 occasions.

Fernandes also revealed which former Red Devils player he would’ve like to play with at the club.

The midfield maestro stated he would’ve wanted to share the pitch with Wayne Rooney at United.

Rooney is the Red Devils all-time record scorer with 253 goals, surpassing Bobby Charlton’s previous landmark in 2017 and once wore the no.8 shirt at United.
