Manchester United will be without 12 first-team players for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils face the German champions in their opening match of the 2023/24 group stage and will be aiming to bounce back from an indifferent start to the Premier League campaign, which has seen United lose three of the first five.

Ten Hag’s second season has certainly not been helped by injuries and Harry Maguire was the latest player to pick up a problem this week, with the defender training on Tuesday morning but not named in the travelling squad later that afternoon. “He had some complaints,” Ten Hag said, when asked about Maguire in his pre-match press conference. “We have to see how bad it is. He finished the training but he was not good enough to travel.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was also ruled out for several weeks on Monday, and joins long-term absentees Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Amad on the sidelines. Raphael Varane and Mason Mount were back in training on Tuesday but have not been deemed fit enough to travel yet, while Kobbie Mainoo and Sofyan Amrabat worked away from the main group as they continue their rehabilitation from respective problems.

In addition, Jadon Sancho remains unavailable due to his ongoing disciplinary issues, while Antony is on a leave of absence amid allegations of assault. The final player who Ten Hag can’t call upon is Donny van de Beek, with the ex-Ajax midfielder not named in United’s 25-man Champions League roster.

As for Bayern, they welcomed back Raphael Guerreiro and Kingsley Coman to training this week. The latter is expected to be an option for Thomas Tuchel despite missing Friday’s 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen due to a muscular issue. Guerreiro is not likely to be involved, however, with the ex-Borussia Dortmund man working his way back to fitness from a long-term calf problem.

In fact, the only player ruled out for certain is Manuel Neuer, and the experienced goalkeeper is still ruled out due to a broken leg he suffered while skiing last December. Harry Kane and Kim Min-jae, two players United tried and failed to sign last summer, are expected to feature for Bayern.

Doubts: Guerreiro, Coman (Bayern). Ruled out: Neuer (Bayern); Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Varane, Shaw, Malacia, Mainoo, Amrabat, Mount, Van de Beek, Antony, Amad, Sancho (United).
