Manchester United could receive fresh interest in one of their fringe stars during the January transfer window.

Erik ten Hag reshaped his squad a little over the summer, spending more than £200million to improve his squad, and the signings included a loan deal for holding midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, with an option to buy. It was thought that United could offload Scott McTominay if they were to sign Amrabat, but the Scot wound up sticking around.

Newcastle and West Ham United were both linked with a move for McTominay, but nothing materialised.

It will now be interesting to see whether McTominay will play a greater role under Ten Hag between now and January, and if he doesn’t, he is likely to leave the club in the winter.

That’s something Gary Neville has spoken about recently on Sky Sports, saying of United’s midfield issues: “What’s clear is that Manchester United’s midfield needs bolstering. Ten Hag wants a number six who can play alongside Casemiro and, at the moment, the club can’t get players out to be able to fund that. If they look at the first two weeks, they have to fund it or there will be a big problem.

“What is clear is that Ten Hag doesn’t want to revert back to Scott McTominay. With Fernandes on the right, the midfield looks all over the place and the front three doesn’t look capable of functioning as one.

“Does he go back to McTominay? Ten Hag has made five substitutions and not used him. It’s almost as if he is managing him out of the club.”

In the meantime, The Mirror are saying that Bayern Munich have shortlisted McTominay ahead of January, with the Scottish midfielder having impressed, in particular, at international level.

It’s claimed Joao Palhinha remains their first option, with the Fulham midfielder having come within touching distance of a move on deadline day, only for the move to collapse. But if Bayern do not pull off a deal for Palhinha, it’s claimed McTominay will be the next option. Last week, the midfielder signed a new Fulham contract until 2028, with the option for a further year.
