Bayern Munich fans unfurled a banner opposing the owners of Manchester United and Manchester City in their Champions League loss on Tuesday.

The German side were comfortably beaten 3-0 by City at the Etihad in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, with goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland ensuring the Blues have a commanding lead halfway through the double-headed encounter.

But in the second half at the Etihad, the away fans brandished a banner that criticised the ownerships of both Manchester clubs. “Glazers, Sheikh Mansour, all autocrats out! Football belongs to the fans.” The same supporters also held up a second sign after the final whistle that read: “Sheikh Mansour out.”

This is not unusual behaviour from Bayern fans, who displayed a banner criticising the UK government for postponing matches earlier this season and the impact it had on scheduling. “Last minute match delays and bans because of a royal’s death?! Respect fans,” it read.

Banners opposing Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig’s ownerships have also been unveiled during previous matches, with Bayern fans among the biggest advocates of the 50+1 ownership model in Germany which gives fans the majority say on matters relating to the running of clubs.

Explaining the law, the Budesliga website say: “The name of the rule refers to the need for members of a club to hold 50 percent, plus one more vote, of voting rights - i.e. a majority. In short, it means that clubs - and, by extension, the fans - have the ultimate say in how they are run, not an outside influence or investor.”
