Erik ten Hag will be without two important Manchester United players for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Barcelona.

The Red Devils face the side currently top of La Liga in a double-headed knockout clash, with the winners progressing to the last-16 of the competition. But United will head to the Nou Camp for the first leg without Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer due to suspension.

The latter, oddly, is ruled out of United’s Europa League clash due to an accumulation of bookings he received for another club in a different competition. But the three group-stage yellow cards he was shown for Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season apply to his next European game.

As for Martinez, he picked three bookings for United in the group stages of the Europa League which means he’s unavailable to play on Thursday. Both United men will be back for the reverse fixture at Old Trafford next week.

Meanwhile, Casemiro’s suspension in the Premier League doesn’t apply to Europe and the former Real Madrid midfielder is expected to return for another battle with Barcelona. It will be the Brazilian’s first game in 12 days, since he was shown a straight red card against Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Scott McTominay, Antony and Anthony Martial did not travel with the Red Devils to Catalonia on Wednesday. None of the trio featured in United’s last two games due to injury, although all three are expected to be short-term problems. Christian Eriksen remains out with an ankle issue and Donny van de Beek won’t play again this season due to the knee injury he sustained in January.

As for Barcelona, they will be without Sergio Busquets and Ousmane Dembele, both of whom were omitted from the club’s matchday squad due to injury. However, other than that, Xavi has a full-strength roster to choose from, which includes ex-Premier League stars Ferran Torres, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso, Raphina and Eric Garcia, as well as household names Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski.

Ruled out: Busquets, Dembele (Barcelona); Martinez, McTominay, Eriksen, Sabitzer, Van de Beek, Antony, Martial (United)
