Raphael Varane partnered Harry Maguire at the back as Manchester United lost 2-1 to Fulham on Saturday

Ian Wright believes Fulham “targeted” Manchester United defender Raphael Varane at the weekend.

Injuries have hampered the Frenchman’s season but he has started seven of United’s last eight top-flight fixtures. Lisandro Martinez is his usual defensive partner but he, too, has suffered several setbacks in 2023-24.

Varane was the closest Man United player to Calvin Bassey for Fulham’s opener on Saturday before he backtracked the length of his own half as Adama Traore charged towards goal in stoppage time. Alex Iwobi ultimately fired home a finish to condemn the Red Devils to a shock 2-1 defeat - their 10th in the league this season.

The loss also dealt a hammer blow to Erik ten Hag’s Champions League hopes - with Sir Jim Ratcliffe watching on from the stands. United face a daunting trip to Manchester City following an FA Cup clash against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Wrighty’s House podcast, Arsenal legend Wright named Varane as the weak link in United’s team. The 60-year-old also claimed supporters should expect “more defeats” in the Premier League this season.

“I tell you who you could hear a couple of, not groans, but… Varane,” Wright said. “I could see Fulham targeted Varane. They marked up everybody in the midfield and only gave one pass back inside to Harry Maguire.

“He took so long to get the control down and give it to Casemiro. Then he got caught on it and Fulham went again. I was like they are so unorganised. There are going to be some more defeats for Man United this season.”
