Anthony Elanga has received his first call up to the Swedish national team after impressive form for Manchester United.

The Red Devils forward has established himself in the club’s first team this season, especially since the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick in December.

Elanga’s three goals in 18 appearances this season for United have impressed Sweden boss Janne Andersson, leading to the forward earning his first call up to their senior team.

Sweden take on Czech Republic on 24 March in a World Cup play-off game, with the winner then facing Poland five days after to see who will earn their place at the competition in Qatar later this year.

Elanga has represented Sweden at multiple youth levels and has scored seven goals in eight appearances for their Under-21 side.

The 19-year-old can represent three countries at international level with Sweden being the country of his birth, while also able to feature for Cameroon or England.

He qualifies to represent Cameroon through his father Joseph Elanga, who earned 10 caps for the Indomitable Lions between 1998 and 2002, while he could also play for England due to living in the country since 2012.

According to Journalist Frida Fagerlund on Twitter, Andersson said the following on Elanga’s call up: “We’ve been in contact and I’m convinced he’s delighted. I didn’t tell him he was in, he gets to find out now.”

United won’t play again until until April 2 due to the international break, with several members of their squad expected to be called up to represent their respective countries.

Fellow Red Devils player Victor Lindelof has also made the Sweden squad with the defender captain of his nation, while former United forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic included in the list as well.
