Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes both labelled Bayern Munich's opening goal against Manchester United as a 'bad mistake' from goalkeeper Andre Onana on Wednesday night.

A tame shot from former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane squeezed through the summer signing from Inter Milan to give the hosts the lead in a game which they eventually won 4-3 after a back-and-forth final six minutes.

United went in 2-0 down at half time after Serge Gnabry finished from close range following an impressive run from Jamal Musiala.

And Ferdinand and Scholes both felt Onana should have done better for Bayern's opener, although Scholes did not lay all the blame at the goalkeeper's feet.

"This is a nightmare scenario for Onana," said Ferdinand on TNT Sports. "He is confident as you like with his feet, we were sitting there saying wow with some of his passes, but as a goalkeeper you are paid to come in there and make saves.

"This is a great bit of skill from Sane to set it up as well, but he does not hit it with any purpose - it’s not wide, it’s not in the corners and Onana and his reaction afterwards, he should save this. It is meat and drink for him and he should be picking this up and looking for his next pass - it’s a bad mistake and one that he needs to recover from."

Scholes added: "He knows he has made a huge mistake. But, I also think there are other things wrong with the goal.

"I think Manchester United in the first half played very well, but a few lapses in concentration and before you know it you are 2-0 down. It’s a big mistake from him and he needs to recover from that and concentrate."

Onana himself took responsibility for the error and the defeat as United lost the game 4-3. Rasmus Hojlund pulled a goal back four minutes into the second half before Harry Kane restored Bayern's two-goal cushion from the penalty spot.

Casemiro made it 3-2 on 88 minutes before Mathys Tel's thumping finish two minutes into stoppage time sealed the win for Bayern. Casemiro scored with virtually the final kick of the game but it proved a consolation.

“It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I am the one who let the team down,” Onana told TNT Sport. “The team were very good and because of me we didn’t win this game. I am happy for the work of the team and we just have to move on. This is the life of a goalkeeper and if we didn’t win today it was because of me.

“We were very good on the ball and they didn’t create any chances before the shot on target, and I made a mistake,” he continued. “It was the key point and the team went down because of that mistake.

“I have to learn from it and be strong and move on. It is not an easy situation, but I am very happy for the comeback of the team, we were fighting to the end. But I have to recognise that because of me we didn’t win.”
