The former Inter Milan hero was left at home for the trip to St James’ Park last Sunday as the club prepared for the second leg of their European showdown with Lyon in the worst possible fashion by getting thrashed 4-1 defeat by Newcastle, with his replacement Altay Bayindir also coming under scrutiny for a misplaced pass which essentially gifted Bruno Guimaraes with an easy tap-in.

Andre Onana wants to stay at Man Utd

When Andre Onana arrived at Carrington from Inter Milan he was seen as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He had played a pivotal role in helping the Italian side reach the Champions League final in his final season, making crucial penalty saves along the way and winning plaudits for him immense composure at sweeping the ball up and starting attacks for his team. He’d won almost everything on offer in Italy and was seen as a transformative signing when he replaced fan favourite David de Gea.

He cost United just under £50m, making him the third most expensive goalkeeper in history at the time. He experienced a mixed first season at Old Trafford which saw him lift the FA Cup but also finish eighth in the league.

However, this season has been hugely difficult for the 28-year-old , and the Lyon performance was the latest in a long-line of difficult nights for the former Ajax man, who has been the subject of criticism by fans in recent weeks.

Some are keen to see a change between the posts, but Mail Sport claims Onana is committed to the cause at Old Trafford. The outlet explains the goalkeeper’s family are settled in north-west England, having recently bought a new house in the area earlier this year. They also add there is no shortage of interest in Onana from the likes of the Saudi Pro League.

No shortage of interest for Andre Onana

Andre Onana, despite a tough individual campaign which saw Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic recently describe him as the worst goalkeeper in United’s history, is still regarded as a talented shot-stopper in some corners with several teams in both Europe and Saudi Arabia keeping an eye on the situation.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently told his YouTube channel. “Now I can say that the interest from Saudi Pro League is still there for Andre Onana. So there are still clubs interested in the African goalkeeper, and there is still strong, strong interest.”

News of Onana’s future comes amid reports that United are planning to replace him with Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, despite the five-time international suffering the fourth relegation of his career.
