Aletico Madrid v Manchester United: Teams announced with Varane, Fred & Rashford returning
The Red Devils have named three centre-backs in the starting line-up.
The Red Devils make three changes from the team that started at Elland Road at the weekend, with Raphael Varane, Fred and Marcus Rashford coming in to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay and Jesse Lingard.
For McTominay, he’s not even in the matchday squad, and United are set to start without a recognised right-back at the Wanda Metropolitano.
It means that Victor Lindleof looks likely to operate there, while Harry Maguire and Varane should play at the heart of defence, with Luke Shaw at left-back.
Behind them, David De Gea plays against his former side for the first time in his career, 11 years after leaving Atletico to join United.
In midfield, McTominay’s absence sees Fred come in at the base, while Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba will offer the attacking runs.
Rashford’s return should see him start on the right of a front three, with Jadon Sancho on the opposite flank and ex-Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo operating through the middle.
As for Atletico, it looks like they’ve gone for a back three against United, with Joao Felix and Angel Correa playing as strikers. Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann are on the bench.
Atletico head into the game after finishing second in a group that contained Liverpool, Porto and AC Milan.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils progressed to this stage after topping their group ahead of Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys.
