Manchester City remain keen on a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Nunes - and one of the midfielder’s current team-mates could have given some indication a move could be getting closer.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly hopeful of boosting his options in the middle of the park after a hamstring injury robbed the City boss of the services of Kevin de Bruyne for up to four months. The Belgium international underwent surgery on the injury after he hobbled out of the season-opening win over Burnley earlier this month and has now began his recovery and rehabilitation - but is said to be at risk of not returning to action until the new year.

The blow has led to City making a move for Portugal international Nunes and there were reports suggesting the treble winners were unsuccessful with a £47million offer for the 25-year-old last week. Further reports have revealed an improved offer will be lodged ahead of Friday’s deadline - although Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has remained firm on his stance over the midfielder’s future.

Speaking last week ahead of his side’s win at Everton, he said: ”If Manchester City come calling, most people in world football are going to be interested in that. Matheus understands the contract situation. He understands the club’s stance, he’s part of the group until he isn’t. I’d have loved to have had him available (at Everton), he’d have been fine.

“He’s a focused boy who understands so I’d much rather have him available than not. I’m 100 per cent sure if Matheus is here at the end of the window, which I hope he is, he’ll be an important part of the group.”

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha gave some indication a move to the Etihad Stadium could be getting closer after he shared an Instagram post of him and Nunes with a strong message of support for his current team.

Written in Portuguese, the caption alongside the post reads: “My brother! May God bless you a lot, thank you for all the moments of partnership since I arrived! I love you brother!”
