The 2022 Ballon d’Or was held at the Theatre du Chatelet on Monday evening in Paris, with the best-performing male and female players recognised for their performance during the 202/22 season.
Manchester City won their second consecutive Premier League title last campaign and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League, so it’s no surprise several of their squad were on the shortlist for the award.
Their cross-town rivals Manchester United had a season to forget in 2021/22, finishing sixth in the league with 58 points - their lowest total in Premier League history. The Red Devils also failed to impress in Europe and domestic cups, but Cristiano Ronaldo managed to keep up his impressive scoring ration.
The Portuguese international ended the campaign on 24 goals in all competitions but didn’t secure a top-10 finish in the Ballon d’Or awards on Monday.
The main prize was won by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema after his outstanding display this year which saw the Frenchman net over 40 goals and win the Champions League, La Liga and Nations League.
As for the Ballon d’Or Feminin, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, who missed the Women’s Euros this year due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, won the award for a second time, beating Arsenal and England forward Beth Mead by one point.
Despite neither a City or Red Devils player lifting the Ballon d’Or this year, the former did win an award at the ceremony - the Club of the Year - after a successful 2022. Alongside the main award, the Yashin Trophy, the Kopa Trophy, the Gerd Muller Trophy and the Socrates Trophy were also presented, with Ederson finishing third in theYashin Trophy.
