It will be a staggered return with so many Manchester City players involved in international tournaments this summer.

Manchester City’s players will not be back in pre-season training this week, unlike the vast majority of Premier League stars.

Liverpool’s players were back at their Kirkby training base over the weekend, while Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur posted pictures of several star names returning on Monday morning. But for City, their players won’t be back in until next week (week commencing 15 July).

There are several reasons for this. Firstly, City’s season ended later than their rivals due to the FA Cup final, while Pep Guardiola has tended to prefer a short pre-season and allow his players to have a longer rest ahead of a new campaign.

The sheer numbers involved in international tournaments is another reason, with 16 representing their nations across Euro 2024 and Copa America, as well as the Olympics later this summer.

It means that of City’s first-team squad, only a handful will be involved in that first week of pre-season. Jack Grealish, who confirmed on Sunday night that he is set to become a father for the first time, is among them. He was omitted from the England squad this summer and has been undergoing an intensive off-season fitness regime.

Erling Haaland will also be back given Norway weren’t involved in Euro 2024. He’ll be joined by goalkeepers Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson. With Ederson’s future uncertain it will be intriguing to see if he returns to training next week, although the 30-year-old ended the 2023/24 campaign injured and it’s not clear whether he has recovered yet.

Elsewhere, Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips, Maximo Perrone, James McAtee and Oscar Bobb should also return, although the exact dates and times when players are back remains unknown. The first-team squad will most likely be supplemented by youth-team players in early weeks of pre-season, some of whom could even be given a chance to impress in the club’s summer friendlies.

City fly to America on 19 July for their summer tour, where they face Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea, before returning for the Community Shield against Manchester United on 10 August.

It’s likely some of City’s international players will meet up with the squad at some point during the US tour. First-team players are expected to be given between three and four weeks off after this summer’s football, meaning Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic could even been back in time before the flight to America.

Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku should also meet up with the squad in the States, while Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Matheus Nunes and Bernardo Silva might also be involved for the latter stages following their quarter-final exits at Euro 2024 with Switzerland and Portugal.

Spain, England and Netherlands progressing to the semi-finals mean Kyle Walker, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Rodri and Phil Foden are unlikely to play any part in the pre-season games and their first match back at City could be the Community Shield, which takes place just a week before the Premier League season kicks off.

The involvement of Sergio Gomez and Julian Alvarez at the Olympics means their respective returns are unclear, although it’s likely the latter will miss a large chunk of August after a busy 2023/24 season and summer. The Argentine striker has played three of his country’s four games at the Copa America and will almost immediately meet up with Javier Mascherano’s squad in France.
