Uefa have announced their latest coefficient points ahead of the 2024/25 season, with both Manchester United and Manchester City featuring in the top 20.
European football’s governing body allocates points based on teams’ successes over a five-year period, with points given for wins in the three competitions.
“The club coefficients are based on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League,” Uefa explained on their website. “The rankings determine the seeding of each club in relevant UEFA competition draws.
“Points awarded each season are in accordance with the relevant competition regulations for that specific season.”
The latest coefficient rankings are based over the five-year period beginning in 2020/21 and determine how clubs will be seeded in the 2024/25 competitions, and which clubs they could subsequently face in the group stages.
With City making it at least the quarter-final stages of the Champions League over the last seven years, they are unsurprisingly among the top of the coefficient rankings, with Pep Guardiola’s side winning the competition in 2022.
As for Manchester United, the Red Devils have flitted between the premier competition and the Europa League in the five-year period and will play in the latter during 2024/25. Erik ten Hag’s side crashed out in the Champions League group stage last season and made it to the Europa League final in 2021.
