'Two weeks' - Liverpool handed major injury blow as star ruled out until May as Man City & Arsenal watch on

Liverpool face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night ahead of Man City’s trip to Brighton on Thursday

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed key forward Diogo Jota has been ruled out for two weeks following an injury he picked up in Sunday’s win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Reds moved back above Manchester City in the Premier League table as Pep Guardiola’s side took part in the FA Cup semi-final, with Bernardo Silva scoring the decisive goal late on to record victory over Chelsea and set up an all-Manchester affair in next month’s final.

Arsenal sit top of the league on goal difference following a 2-0 win at Wolves, with City a point behind in third having played a game fewer. City could be four points off the top by the time they face Brighton on the south coast, with both their title rivals in action in midweek. However, Liverpool will have to face their Merseyside neighbours Everton without Jota who has proven to be their most efficient attacker this term. His goal conversion rate of 29 per cent is better than all of the Reds’ other forwards, with a lack of cutting edge in front of goal costing Klopp’s side in recent weeks.

Klopp said on Tuesday: “Unfortunately, yes. Diogo scored the goal [against Fulham], felt a little bit and now we found out it’s a little bit more. So he will be out for two weeks. I cannot really say a lot about it, to be honest. Before which game where he didn’t start, he got a knock – normal challenge, then felt a little bit at the hip. That was then fine because we didn’t start him, brought him on, that was alright.

“Then he started the last game, was obviously OK and then with the finish… it’s a small one but we are late in the season, so obviously now it’s not a great moment for each injury pretty much. It’s not a big one. When I say two weeks, actually really it’s pretty much nothing but enough to not be available.”

Man City’s fate remains in their own hands but any further dropped points for Liverpool and Arsenal in the final weeks of the season will ease the pressure on Guardiola’s men as they look to complete the double following their treble from last season.
