Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of the weekend trip to Manchester City.

It is reported that Rodrigo Bentancur will miss the next two-and-a-half months after the midfielder tore his ankle ligament. He suffered the injury during Sunday's defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Reports suggest he now faces another lengthy spell out, "football.london understands that scans have shown that the tackle resulted in the tearing of a ligament in his ankle."

Speaking to the website after the game, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said: "Yeah, not sure. It is his ankle I think. It wasn't a great tackle. I thought he started the game so well and I think it was the reason we got a real good foothold on the game.

"He's such a creative player. It's the last thing we needed, another injury. So disappointed to lose him but we're yet to see the extent of it."

City head into the game fresh from Champions League action. The European champions ensured they took top spot in their Champions League group courtesy of a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday, with City overturning a two-goal deficit at half-time.

But conceding sloppy goals has been a common theme across the Champions League this term, and Pep Guardiola’s side have been punished on the break on five occasions in the group stages.

Guardiola said: “Maybe for the future it is good to win in that game, not comfortably, to realise, look in the mirror and say we must do better,” he added, before claiming the Leipzig win and draw with Chelsea were ‘warnings’ for his side.

As well as conceding five goals across five Champions League matches, City also have managed just four clean sheets from 13 league games this season.
