Three factors behind Pep Guardiola’s Man City ‘extension’ revealed
The Manchester City manager is reportedly set to stay at the Etihad for another year.
Pep Guardiola is set to remain at Manchester City for another season according to reports.
The Athletic broke the story late on Tuesday night that the Catalan has agreed a one-year extension with the option of additional 12 months. That would bring his time at the Etihad up to a decade at least.
“An official announcement confirming the new contract is expected in the coming days,” The Athletic add.
That City wanted Guardiola to remain in situ has never been in doubt. It was always going to be his decision whether to extend his deal that expires at the end of the season.
But, according to the Manchester Evening News, there was concern from Guardiola about whether to continue at City and his ongoing back pain was a factor in his reservations about possibly staying. The 53-year-old required surgery last season which forced him to miss two games.
Making the right decision not just for him but for his family was also part of Guardiola’s thinking, while his ambitions to one day manage at international level were also important.
The MEN add the news adds ‘security and stability for the long-term’ with Txiki Begiristain set to leave at the end of season and be replaced by Hugo Viana.
It also means Guardiola will be at the Etihad to deal with any possible fallout from the 115 charges. A ruling is expected before the end of the season and the City boss has also insisted for months that it would not a part of his decision making.
Meanwhile, Guardiola will hope any announcement will boost confidence among the squad and see an upturn in results. The Blues are currently on their worst run during his tenure, with four straight losses in all competitions prior to the international break.
City return with a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before matches against Feyenoord and Liverpool.
