West Ham United have expressed their interest in signing Kalvin Phillips on loan this month, ManchesterWorld understands.

The Manchester City midfielder is hopeful of completing a mid-season move away from the Etihad due to his lack of play time, and has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

As reported earlier this week, Newcastle and Crystal Palace have been in the driving seat and the two sides pushing to complete a deal, but a source has confirmed to ManchesterWorld that West Ham have also joined the race.

The Hammers’ well-stocked midfield could become a factor in Phillips’ decision, with the club bringing in James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez over the summer. But David Moyes would like to add further options by completing a short-term deal for City’s no.4.

The champions are willing to let the player leave on loan if an acceptable offer is forthcoming, although that could be an issue for the financially strapped Newcastle. “In an ideal world, given the freedom to act we would have brought players in already,” Eddie Howe recently admitted.

"But we're not in that situation - as Darren [Eales, Newcastle CEO] alluded to on Thursday, Financial Fair Play is a problem for us, and we're having to navigate round that.”

As for Palace, they could be without Cheick Doucoure for the remainder of the season and are keen to add reinforcements. Roy Hodgson publicly acknowledged their interest this week and said he would ‘like to think that we could possibly put our hand up and push ourselves forward’ if a deal for Phillips is possible.

Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus have also been linked with a move but neither are currently pursuing a deal for the 28-year-old.

Phillips has made just two starts this season in all competition and has admitted in October that he may need to leave City in January in order to preserve his place in the England squad.
