Unlike other years, the World Cup will take place midway through a season due to the high temperatures in Qatar during the summer.

Despite the controversial location, the competition will go ahead with some of the world’s best players set to represent their country.

The Premier League is regarded as the best league in the world, according to UEFA, and a significant number of international players play in the competition.

Manchester City are back-to-back winners of the Premier League and have a strong squad that consists of players who regularly feature for their nations, including those who have qualified for the World Cup.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the 16 Sky Blues stars expected to feature for their country at the World Cup…

The experienced full-back has featured regularly for England under Gareth Southgate and has even played as a centre-back when needed. Despite being the oldest member of the Three Lions’ Nations League squad, he has been a consistent performer for both club and country.

Ruben Dias - Portugal

Regarded as one of the world’s best centre-backs, Ruben Dias hasn’t featured for Portugal since last year due to injury. He plays a rotational role in defence for the nation, but with his performances at club level, should see him as a regular in the World Cup.

Kalvin Phillips - England

Has had to withdraw from the latest England squad due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery, Kalvin Phillips, when fit, makes for a great defensive-midfield option for Southgate, though he could be seen as a rotation player at the World Cup.

John Stones - England

A regular at centre-back for the Three Lions under Southgate and a player who has been a solid performer this season for City with Aymeric Laporte still not match fit. The 28-year-old will likely start in England’s upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany and is expected to be a regular at the World Cup.

Nathan Ake - Netherlands

The Sky Blues’ other rotational centre-back, Nathan Ake is likely to be part of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad this winter, but faces stiff competition for a starting spot. He featured in their 2-2 draw with Poland in June.

Joao Cancelo - Portugal

A versatile member of City’s squad, Joao Cancelo is a regular for Portugal and is likely to be their starting right-back at the World Cup this winter.

Ilkay Gundogan - Germany

The City captain scored his 15th goal on his 60th cap for Germany in their 5-2 win over Italy in June. He is expected to be part of their squad for the World Cup after a solid start to the season for the SKy Blues.

Jack Grealish - England

The club’s most expensive signing has been hit-and-miss for them since joining last summer from Aston Villa. Despite this, Southgate has opted to call him up for England’s Nations League games and is expected to select him for the World Cup.

Aymeric Laporte - Spain

Is yet to feature for City this season due to having knee surgery in the summer, Aymeric Laporte is regarded as one of the world’s best centre-backs and when fit, will likely earn his spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Rodri - Spain

The midfielder has played in all of City’s Premier League games so far and has been a regular since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2019. He has been capped 33 times by Spain and is likely to earn more at the World Cup.

Kevin De Bruyne - Belgium

One of, if not the best, central-midfielders in the world, Kevin De Bruyne is a no-brainer to be selected for Belgium at the World Cup and is likely to be top of Roberto Martinez’s list in November.

Julian Alvarez - Argentina

The 22-year-old has impressed since his arrival from River Plate, scoring three goals in eight appearances in all competitions for City so far this season. He is expected to be part of Argentina’s World Cup squad and is likely to feature through the middle of a front three or on either wing.

Bernardo Silva - Portugal

Manuel Akanji - Switzerland

The centre-back has impressed since his deadline day arrival from Borussia Dortmund, featuring three times. He is a regular for Switzerland and is expected to be on the plane to Qatar this winter.

Ederson - Brazil

Regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Ederson is City’s first choice between the sticks and will battle Liverpool’s Alisson for a starting spot at the World Cup for Brazil.

Phil Foden - England

Can feature in a number of positions for club and country, Phil Foden has scored three goals and registered two assists for City this season. He can be a threat on the wing or as a midfielder and is likely to feature under Southgate in Qatar this winter.
