Sergio Aguro has said he doesn’t know what position Julian Alvarez will play for Manchester City, following the youngster’s signing last week.

Alvarez’s move to the Etihad stadium was announced on transfer-deadline day, although the attacker has subsequently returned to River Plate on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old can play in several positions and Aguero, who has firsthand experience of Alvarez’s talent from their time in the Argentina squad, feels City have added a versatile player to their ranks.

“He’s very good, really good,” the Sky Blues’ record scorer said on his Twitch channel. “I like him, we have to see in what position they’re going to use him. I don’t know if he’s going to play as a nine, for me he’s a player who has to play more freely; he’s restless.

“I get along very well with him. When we were in the national team, he always asked me things and I as a striker told him my experience. He is a very good player.

“Personally I’d put him up front and let him roam and break the lines because he’s a very active footballer, I’d have him as an inside forward or attacking midfielder or winger.

“The thing is that Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, doesn’t use forwards. I was a nine but Pep often didn’t play with forwards and so I didn’t feature. He got used to that, it was a tactic of his. I really don’t know right now where Julian could fit in at City.”

Alvarez’s first interview

Alvarez has not done an official interview yet with City, given he hasn’t travelled to England since the deal was announced.

However, the Argentina international has spoken about the move in his homeland, and revealed he has already spoken to Guardiola.

“I’m happy. Talk to my representative, the clubs talked and it happened," he told ESPN, when asked about how the transfer came about.

"I already spoke with Guardiola, a little chat. I’m an admirer of him. He welcomed me and was happy because I joined his project.”

"He welcomed me, congratulated me on what I had done, and that he was happy that I was joining the Manchester City project for these years.”
