Man City star crowned Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament as England suffer final heartbreak
Spain won a fourth European champions courtesy of Sunday’s 2-1 victory in Berlin.
Rodri was crowned Uefa Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament as Spain beat England 2-1 in the final on Sunday night.
A late Mikel Oyarzaba strike handed the Spanish a record-equalling fourth European crown and denied Gareth Southgate’s men an opportunity to win a first major honour in 58 years. But it was a crown that Spain undoubtedly deserved following a tournament in which they won all seven games.
After a slow start in the first half of Sunday’s final, Luis de la Fuente’s side took control in the second period. Spain dominated possession, exploited the ever-increasing gaps in the England rearguard and managed six shots on target.
All this without Rodri, who was withdrawn at half-time due to injury. But his lack of involvement in Spain’s biggest 45 minutes of the competition didn’t prevent him from being named Player of the Tournament. It was a prize that was richly deserved with Rodri the on-field conductor who dictated the flow and pace of games throughout the last month.
It’s a description City fans know well, and the 28-year-old’s international success coupled with his repeated club triumphs has seen suggestions he could earn the Ballon d’Or this year.
“It’s unbelievable; this is a dream. Now we are the best national team in the Euros, it is crazy,” Rodri told ITV after the game. “This is about the humility we have had for all these years, to keep working, never lose the faith.
“This tournament… we beat four World Cup champions. How tough is it? I think they [team-mates] deserve everything.”
Rodri’s individual accolade means he follows in the footsteps of some illustrious former recipients of the Player of the Tournament award, such as Xavi, Andreas Iniesta and Zinedine Zidane.
The City star played in six of Spain’s seven games this summer and, prior to Sunday, had played every minute of Spain’s knockout matches.
