Rico Lewis expresses England Euro 2024 ‘dream’

Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis has admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to force his way into the England squad ahead of Euro 2024.

The defender has represented his country at various youth levels and has earned four caps for the Under-21 side. But the 18-year-old, who is playing an increasingly prominent  role in City’s squad, has said he would love to be named in Gareth Southgate’s senior set-up.

Lewis played 23 times last season for City, and in his maiden campaign as a senior player managed to claim winner’s medals in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. He’s already made nine appearances this season, and Pep Guardiola claimed last month that it is ‘difficult to find’ a player with Lewis’ attributes.

His rapid rise has led to some suggestions that he could be in line for an England call-up, and could even potentially be an option for this summer’s Euro 2024 squad.

“It’s a dream that every player will want to play at a big tournament with their country,” Lewis admitted, ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Young Boys. “But I am just focusing on what I can do to better myself and if that comes with it, it comes with it. If it doesn't, it doesn’t.

“It’s not something I’m focusing on, I’m just trying to focus on the things I can improve on in myself. There are so many things I can get better at.”

And Lewis revealed he’s already asked his City team-mates about what it’s like in Southgate’s set-up. “When they come back from international break, I’ll ask them what it’s like, how it’s different from here, any sort of information I can get because it will give me an idea of what needs to be done to get there,” he said.
