‘It is time’ - Premier League chief makes admission on Manchester City’s 115 charges

Richard Masters was asked when Manchester City’s case will be heard.

Premier League executive Richard Masters has said it is ‘self-evident’ that the legal case against Manchester City must be resolved soon, adding ‘it is time’ for the outcome to be delivered.

Reports this week claimed City’s hearing surrounding the 115 charges will be heard in mid-September, with an outcome expected before the end of the 2023/24 season. It comes 18 months after the Premier League first made the allegations against the club, which relate to breaches of financial regulations, something the club have always strenuously denied.

Speaking in an interview this week, Masters would not comment on the exact date the hearing will be heard by an independent commission. “I have confirmed in the past that a date has been set but because of the confidentiality around the process, I can’t confirm if the media speculation is correct or otherwise,” he told the BBC.

“I think it is important that the situation resolves itself and when the case has been heard there will be a decision published and all the questions you would like me to answer will be answered as part of that process. A decision will be published and an independent panel of people will answer those questions for you.”

The Premier League have faced criticism that Everton and Nottingham Forest have been handed sanctions in the period since City were first charged, with the clubs facing points deductions last season. Pep Guardiola has also previously said he would like the case to be concluded quickly.

“It is time now for it to resolve itself,” Masters said. “It’s been going on for a number of years and I think it’s self-evident that the case needs to be heard and answered.”

Since City faced the charges from the Premier League, they have claimed two further titles, with Masters opting against coming to the Etihad on the final day of last season to hand out the winners’ medals and trophy.
