Pep Guardiola revealed Ederson’s injury ‘doesn’t look good’ following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

The champions had led at half-time via John Stones’ goal, but faced a second-half onslaught from Liverpool at Anfield. For all the hosts’ excellent chances from open play, it was a penalty five minutes into the second period that proved decisive.

Nathan Ake’s under-hit pass back to Ederson was intercepted by Darwin Nunez inside the box. But with the City keeper already shaping to kick the ball, he couldn’t manage to adjust his feet in time, and Ederson followed through and cleaning out the Liverpool no.9.

It was a costly mistake, not just because Alexis Mac Allister converted the subsequent spot-kick, but the collision also saw Ederson pick up an injury that ultimately forced him to be replaced by Stefan Ortega in the 56th minute.

The Brazilian stopper hobbled off the pitch, in a concerning sight for City fans with an FA Cup clash against Newcastle United next week and important games upcoming in the Premier League and Champions League.

Asked about the injury during a post-match interview with beIN Sports, Guardiola grimaced and replied: “It doesn’t look good.”

Yet, given Ortega was already likely to play against Newcastle, and with an international gap following, it gives Ederson three weeks to recover for the injury in time to face Arsenal on 31 March.

Sunday's draw leaves City third in the table, a point behind Liverpool and the Gunners. “There are a lot of games to play and it is not in our hands,” said Guardiola. “We play against Arsenal, but not against Liverpool. Many games to play, we will see what happens.”
