Pep Guardiola has said he is not sure if Jeremy Doku will be fit to face Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The winger picked up a knock in Manchester City’s draw against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and had to be replaced in the second half by Jack Grealish. With the latter suspended for the trip to his former side, City could be light on attacking options for the clash against top-four Villa.

“Training this afternoon and I have not talked with the doctors and we will see,” was Guardiola’s response when asked for the latest on Doku.

Grealish isn’t the only player suspended, and Rodri also picked up a fifth booking of the season against Spurs, meaning he is banned for the Villa game.

It gives Guardiola a headache to solve at the base of midfield, but the City boss said John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake could be options to come in and play ahead of the back four.

Guardiola also said there is a ‘chance’ he could hand Kalvin Phillips a first league start of the season, and described the midfielder's attitude in training as ‘exceptional’. Meanwhile, Matheus Nunes and Kevin De Bruyne are injured for the game, but Mateo Kovacic is an option after he returned from a recent knock in the Spurs draw.

City head into Wednesday's clash on the back of three straight draws, while Villa have won their last 13 home league matches. The sides are separated by just a point in the table, and fourth-place Villa could leapfrog City in the table with a win.
