Pep Guardiola gives Erling Haaland injury update after striker limps off v Bournemouth

Pep Guardiola has said Erling Haaland suffered an ankle injury in Manchester City’s 6-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth on Saturday, which could keep him out of the midweek Champions League clash.

The striker was seen limping at the end of the first half and didn’t emerge at the start of the second period, with Phil Foden replacing him at the break.

Asked after the game about Haaland’s issue, Guardiola said the 23-year-old has picked up a knock, which means he is a doubt for Tuesday's game against Young Boys and the trip to Chelsea next Sunday in the Premier League.

“Twist with the ankle. I didn’t speak with the doctors. We will see in the next days how it develops,” the City boss said after the game, before confirming he is not sure whether Haaland will be fit for during the week.

The news comes just a day after Guardiola said Haaland is now feeling ‘free of problems’ following a few minor knocks during his time at Borussia Dortmund and early days at City.

“He's so important for us, he feels really fit now,” Guardiola explained on Friday. “Sometimes he has niggles, especially in the abductor in the past when he came from Dortmund. Now completely opposite, he feels free of problems. Today I saw him training with incredible energy.”

Despite Haaland's second-half absence, City still went on to record an excellent 6-1 win over Bournemouth, with Jeremy Doku scoring the opener and then setting up the next four, which were scored by Bernardo Silva (2), Manuel Akanji and Phil Foden. Nathan Ake then added a sixth in the latter with a diving header against his former side.

Guardiola admitted after the game that even he has been surprised by Doku's impact since he joined from Rennes over the. "A little bit, I'll be honest," he said.

"I had expectations about him. He create something for the crowd. When he takes the ball everyone gets excited - me too. Today, Erling played 45 minutes and didn't score and we were able to score six goals. It's really good."

It’s a result that, at least temporarily, leaves City top of the Premier League table. Tottenham Hotspur could overtake the champions on Monday when they face Chelsea at home.
