Pep Guardiola has clarified comments he made earlier this month that the majority of the media are Liverpool fans and want them to beat Manchester City to the title this season.

The champions will reclaim their Premier League crown on Sunday if they can beat Aston Villa on the final weekend of the season, but a slip up would allow Liverpool to finish first, should they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As the drawn-out title battle draws to a close, Guardiola addressed the media on Friday afternoon, and was asked if he really feels the majority of the media and neutrals want Liverpool to claim top spot.

However, the former Barcelona and Bayern boss explained his comments were perhaps taken out of context and he feels this is the case all across Europe that sides with more history have greater support.

“I’m pretty sure my English is not good enough after four or five years here, maybe I don’t explain well,” Guardiola explained.

“All I said is when you arrive on the verge of the title the clubs with more tradition and history winning leagues, winning Champions League, they have more supporters through the media.

“But that happens in Spain with Barcelona and [Real] Madrid, in Germany with Bayern Munich, in Italy with Milan and Inter. We are outsiders in the last decade, but of course people don’t want Liverpool to win.

“Of course, Liverpool fans want to win and others prefer to us. In general, they are a team with more history in terms of titles and trophies. It’s normal. If you want to deny it, deny it.

“Maybe I am wrong but if you compare with other countries around the world there are two or three teams people support more than the other ones because they have been there more and more times. Here it is the same, people support more Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal because they have more history. We are new in this position.”
