Manchester City’s international stars return for pre-season training - but four to miss Community Shield
Manchester City’s full first-team squad trained at their CFA base on Tuesday.
Manchester City’s players returned to a full training session on Tuesday, the first containing the majority of Pep Guardiola’s squad this summer.
The likes of Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish, Ederson, Rico Lewis and Kalvin Phillips have been back in training for nearly a month and were part of the group that travelled to the USA for pre-season fixtures against Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea, while Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic also met up with the squad in the USA.
After returning to the UK following the Chelsea friendly on Saturday, the group were given a few days to recover but were back at City’s training base on Tuesday.
They were joined by those represented their countries at Euro 2024 and Copa America, and weren’t involved in the US tour. Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku reported back last week for initial tests, while Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Matheus Nunes, Bernardo Silva and Savinho returned on Monday. Nathan Ake was back on Tuesday with the Netherlands’ semi-final elimination coming later than his City team-mates.
No date has yet been set for those who played in the Euro 2024 final: Kyle Walker, John Stones, Rodri and Phil Foden. It has been more than three weeks since the quartet were last in action - the period most players have been given off this summer after international tournaments - but Pep Guardiola has encouraged all of his players to return only when they feel ready.
It means the England and Spanish players are unlikely to play any part in this weekend’s Community Shield against Manchester United.
Tuesday’s session with the full first-team group was Guardiola’s first since May, and although Cancelo was not spotted in the club’s gallery of training images published on the website it’s understood he was part of the group that trained. Ake was also missing but he was carrying out individual tests on his first day back with at City’s CFA base.
After this weekend’s United clash at Wembley, Guardiola will turn his attention to the Premier League opener against Chelsea, by which point he’ll hope the team’s fitness has improved.
“We will be late,” Guardiola said last week about City’s preparations for the new season. “It's about trying not to drop many points, try to compete well. We don't have players because they have to rest.”
One player who won’t be in pre-season training is Julian Alvarez. The Argentina international is close to securing a move to Atletico Madrid for a fee worth up to £81.5m. Alvarez is yet to agree personal terms with the Spanish club, but a deal is expected to be concluded soon.
