Manchester City have confirmed Phil Foden will miss Saturday’s home clash against Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The attacking midfielder is currently on England duty but has been ruled out of the Three Lions Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Sunday afternoon. Foden has undergone surgery in London after suffering from acute appendicitis and will now return to City and began his recovery process.

A club statement released on Sunday afternoon confirmed the news. It read: “Phil will now return to Manchester to begin rehabilitation. He will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool and it is unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.”

Two of Foden’s City team-mates have been dropped from Gareth Southgate’s starting lineup after helping England claim a 2-1 win against Italy in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday night.

Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish have both been named among the Three Lions substitutes and have been replaced by Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Leicester City star James Maddison. Kyle Walker and John Stones will both start against a Ukraine side containing former City team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Chelsea defender Reece James has also withdrawn from Southgate’s squad with what has been described as ‘an ongoing issue’.
