Manchester City’s Erling Haaland will miss Norway’s opening Euro 2024 qualifying games after picking up a groin injury against Burnley.

The 22-year-old scored a hat-trick as City won 6-0 against the Championship leaders, setting up a semi-final at Wembley with another promotion-chasing side in Sheffield United next month.

Norway coach Stale Solbakken confirmed the prolific striker would be absent for matches against Spain and Georgia as Norway begin their Group A campaign.

He said: “Erling took it hard when he realised that he could not fight for the team. Fortunately, there is still plenty of self-confidence, talent and cohesion in this group to win points in the next matches.”

Norway national team doctor Ola Sand added: “After doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it for the games against Spain and Georgia. It is better that he receives medical follow-up at his club.”

Haaland has hit the net 21 times for his country. He has earned 23 caps, having made his debut at the age of just 19. The former Borussia Dortmund man has an incredible 42 goals in 37 games for City this term.

It is yet to be seen how long his groin injury will rule him out for, with City eight points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

Pep Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand over the Gunners and return to action against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on April 1.
