Manchester City could break a 46-year record at the start of next season.

Hidden in the midst of Manchester City’s title celebrations was an almost unmentioned new record achieved by Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Catalan has become accustomed to breaking and setting new records since his arrival at the Etihad in 2016, and Sunday’s Premier League triumph was a maiden fourth consecutive top-flight title, something never before achieved in English football history.

City held off Arsenal’s pursuit for several weeks and ended the campaign with a remarkable nine straight victories. They also went unbeaten for over five months in all competitions, since their 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 6 December.

Sunday’s 3-1 victory over West Ham United stretched that unbeaten run to 35 games in all competitions, the longest-ever run for a Premier League side. The only team to better those numbers are the Nottingham Forest side of 1978, who went 40 games in a row without losing. That’s a record Pep Guardiola will surely have in his sights next season.

Sunday’s title sees the former Barcelona manager move onto six top-flight titles, level with George Ramsay and Bob Paisley. Only Sir Alex Ferguson’s 13 can beat that tally. In 15 years as a manager, Guardiola has now won 12 top-flight titles in Spain, Germany and England - a truly remarkable feat.

City ended the 2023/24 campaign on 91 points and it’s the fourth time the club have reached 90+ points in a single campaign - all of which have come under Guardiola. That’s another record for the Blues, ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool, who have achieved 90+ points in three separate league campaigns.

The champions also went unbeaten at home during the entire league season and last lost a match at the Etihad in November 2022. That’s 30 straight Premier League matches without a home defeat, a run that stretches back to before the Qatar World Cup.

At the heart of City’s success was Rodri, who played 34 matches and scored eight goals. Incredibly, Guardiola’s side lost three of the four league games he missed in 2023/24, a stat which underlines just how pivotal he is to City’s success.

The Spanish midfielder last lost a league match in February 2023, and has gone 50 without defeat. Only Sol Campbell’s run of 56 games is a longer streak in the English top flight.

Erling Haaland was another star of the season and became the first-ever player to collect the Golden Boot in his first two seasons as a Premier League player. He netted 27 goals in 31 games, and only Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah have won the Golden Boot more times than City’s no.9.
