Manchester City could face expulsion from the Premier League if found guilty of breaching financial laws, according to reports.

The Blues were charged with over 100 alleged breaches on Monday, relating to revenue, manager and player remuneration, complying with UEFA regulations and profitability and sustainability rules. But the Times reports that the punishment for City could include ‘a points deduction or even expulsion from the league’ if they are deemed to have violated the financial laws. BBC Radio Manchester reporter Mike Minay also tweeted to say: “Manchester City face possible charges ranging from 'reprimand', unlimited fines, suspension from the league and points deduction.”

City responded to the Premier League’s claims a few hours later, saying: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

In a statement on Monday, the Premier League said:  “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club (Club) to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.
