Man City player ratings vs RB Leipzig as scores range from 9/10 to 4/10 - gallery

Riyad Mahrez’s goal wasn’t enough for Manchester City to take a win from the club’s Champions League last-16 first leg.

It was a classic game of two halves for Manchester City on Wednesday night as they drew 1-1 with RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

Riyad Mahrez had put City one goal ahead in the opening 45 of the last-16 enconter, but the Bundesliga side were significantly better after the break and ensured the tie is level after the first 90 minutes, thanks to Josko Gvardiol’s header.

It was a high-energy start at the Red Bull Arena but it didn’t result in many scoring opportunities, with the best efforts coming from a Ruben Dias header that was held while Rodri shot over from the edge of the box.

But on 27 minutes City took the lead via Mahrez. It was Jack Grealish who began the move as he pounced on a loose ball from Xaver Schlager, and played a forward pass which reached Mahrez after squirming through Gvardiol and Ilkay Gundogan as they competed for the ball, before Mahrez struck it first time beyond Janis Blaswich.

City continued on top after the goal, with Rodri heading wide and Grealish firing an effort over, while it took until first-half injury-time for Leipzig to test Ederson, who comfortably held Timo Werner’s strike from the edge of the box.

However, it was a different game in the second period with Leipzig vastly improved. Benjamin Henrichs provided an early scare after the break when he went close twice, with a header and side-foot shot failing to hit the target.

But Ederson was frequently called into action, as palmed away a Werner cross, stopped an Andre Silva chip and got a hand to a Gvardiol strike from outside the box. Yet it was the latter who headed home in the 70th minute from a Leipzig corner, although the goal could have been disallowed on another night for a foul on Ruben Dias from Gvardiol.

City had been quiet up until the equaliser, with a Haaland right-foot shot that failed to hit the target representing the only chance in the 25 minutes after the break. But on 74 minutes, Ilkay Gundogan’s curled shot was saved by Blaswich.

The visitors did grow into the second period in the latter stages and controlled more of the ball, albeit that didn’t result in any major chances. Here’s how we rated the players...
