Goals from James McAtee and Aymeric Laporte ensured Manchester City won in Tokyo.

Manchester City beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly in Japan.

City fielded 21 players during the encounter, with Kevin De Bruyne remaining on the sidelines as he continues his recover from injury. But City didn’t require his services to beat the German champions, with goals from James McAtee and Aymeric Laporte.

On a humid night in Tokyo, John Stones had the first chance of note when his shot from the edge of the box dragged just wide. But it was Bayern who looked more dangerous in the opening stages with the dynamic Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman repeatedly running at the City backline.

On 17 minutes Nathan Ake was forced to scramble across the box and block a dangerous strike from Jamal Musiala, not long before Sane clipped the top of the crossbar from a free-kick.

Yet on 21 minutes it was Pep Guardiola’s side who grabbed the first goal of the game. Rico Lewis stretched the Bayern defence with a penetrative run in behind, and he cut the ball back to Julian Alvarez in the centre. The Argentine’s shot was saved by Yann Sommer, but McAtee knocked in the rebound.

Bayern certainly carried more of a threat in the opening 45 minutes - Musiala saw a shot saved by Ederson late in the half, while the City goalkeeper produced a good stop with his feet to keep out Coman’s powerful strike.

The Blues made eight changes at the break, along with Manuel Akanji’s introduction in the first period, and it was the Swiss defender who had the first chance in the second half as his effort from a corner was saved by Sven Ulreich.

Thomas Tuchel changed all 11 players at half-time, with a number of youngsters involved after the interval. City found it easier to retain possession against the juvenile opposition, and on 58 minutes Rodri’s shot was cleared off the line by Josip Stanisic, following a well-orchestrated move.

Despite City’s domination in terms of possession, Bayern grabbed a late equaliser when Mathys Tel poked the ball past Ederson after the keeper stopped Sergio Gomez inadvertently turning the ball into his own goal.

Erling Haaland nearly re-established City’s lead, but his strike inside the box was blocked by Leon Goretzka, while Laporte saw a header poked off target by Ulrich soon after. Yet minutes later the centre-back stroked the ball into the back of the net after Maximo Perrone and Phil Foden combined well from a corner, with the latter’s shot saved, only for Laporte to follow up and tap the ball home, in the final action of the night.

Here’s how we rated the City players…

Ederson- 6

Made two good saves in the first half but had little to do after the break.

Kyle Walker- 6 (off 45)

Captained City against the side he could potentially join this summer. The defender mainly dealt well with the threat of Coman.

Ruben Dias- 5 (off 45)

Was moved about at times by the Bayern runs in behind.

John Stones- 6 (off 45)

Tried to get on the ball and advance into midfield.

Nathan Ake- 7 (off 29)

Made a well-timed block in the box and also intercepted a Bayern pass just as Sane went to shoot early on. The Dutchman came off with what appeared to be a very minor knock.

Rico Lewis- 8 (off 45)

Made some brilliant runs from midfield and set up McAtee’s goal. He also used the ball well and produced some nice passes.

Mateo Kovacic- 6 (off 45)

Kovacic was good in midfield and used the ball well, although he was a tad overrun at times.

James McAtee- 5 (off 45)

Tapped in to give City the lead early on and the youngster started in midfield but pushed up alongside Alvarez.

Bernardo Silva- 6 (off 72)

Was clever on the ball, rarely losing it, and pressed well. Silva played more minutes than any other outfield player.

Julian Alvarez- 5 (off 45)

Found it difficult to get involved, but improved as the half continued.

Jack Grealish- 6 (off 45)

Similar to Silva on the opposite flank, City’s no.10 rarely lost possession and played some nice passes inside.

Manuel Akanji- 6 (on 29)

Slotted in seamlessly after his introduction and linked well with his City team-mates.

Joao Cancelo- 7 (on 45)

Looked good as an inverted right-back. Cancelo saw a lot of the ball and played some nice passes. The Portugal international also kept Sadio Mane quiet.

Rodri- 7 (on 45)

Started at centre-back and pushed into midfield. Rodri kept the ball ticking over in the middle.

Aymeric Laparte- 6 (on 45)

Didn’t have much to deal with and City’s no.14 organised the backline. Laporte's 86th-minute goal ensured City grabbed the win.

Kalvin Phillips- 6 (on 45)

Pressed well and moved the ball quickly.

Phil Foden- 8 (on 45)

Probably City’s best performer in the second half and Foden had some nice touches on the ball, while he regularly looked to go forward in possession. The England international also set up Laporte's winner late on.

Oscar Bobb- 7 (on 45)

Had some dangerous runs cutting inside and didn’t look out of his depth alongside more senior team-mates.

Erling Haaland- 5 (on 45)

Didn’t have many touches but showed a few signs of danger with well-timed runs in behind.

Sergio Gomez- 5 (on 45)

Had some good moments on the ball but also needlessly gave the ball away on a few occasions.

Maximo Perrone- 5 (on 72)

Didn't take many risks in his cameo and often played the simple pass.
