Manchester City fell to another defeat in Sunday’s Manchester derby to continue their dreadful recent run of results, with eight losses in 11.
That scenario seemed unlikely with the game heading into the final stages and City leading by a late goal, but a remarkable finish from Manchester United, who scored in the 88th and 90th minutes, saw them come away with all three points.
It was a frenetic and intense start to the game, which was amplified by the hostile Etihad atmosphere. But for all the huffing and puffing, there were few moments of quality in the chaotic opening throes of the contest.
It took until the 21st minute for anyone to muster a shot, when Phil Foden chested the ball and then volleyed just wide. The Mancuinan - who netted a hat-trick in this fixture two seasons ago - also flashed two more decent efforts wide in the first half, including one that deflected off Harry Maguire.
But it’s set-pieces that have been United’s Achilles heel of late and City punished that weakness in the 36th minute. Kevin De Bruyne’s cross from a short corner deflected off Amad and floated perfectly in the direction of Josko Gvardiol, who nodded in his fourth Premier League goal of the season - Erling Haaland is the only City player with more.
It took United until the 62nd minute to register a shot on target, when Amad’s deft header forced Ederson to scramble across his line and palm the ball wide.
Heading into the final minutes, there was no sign of the dramatic finish that was set to play out, even though Kobbie Mainoo went close with a header and then Bruno Fernandes chipped just wide after a perfectly timed through ball from Rasmus Hojlund.
As has been the case in recent weeks, the City implosion was very much of their own making. Matheus Nunes had a tough afternoon at left-back and it was wayward pass back was intercepted by Amad, who rushed through on goal. In his panic-stricken effort to regain possession, Nunes felled Amad in the box and left the referee with no alternative but to point to the spot Bruno Fernandes coolly converted and then celebrated in front of the livid home supporters.
Then before City could react, it was 2-1. Lisandro Martinez’s floated pass in behind the City defence picked out Amad again. This time he finished himself, placing the ball beyond Ederson, who came rushing off his line and missed the ball, to hand United all three points.
Here’s how we rated the City players...
