Premier League net spend table: Man City compared to Man Utd & Liverpool as Guardiola slams transfer critics

The likes of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Claudio Echeverri have all arrived at the Etihad this month

Premier League champions Manchester City are by far and away the biggest spenders of the January transfer window, after spending more than all the other 19 Premier League clubs combined last winter, with a total of £126.1m of new recruits.

The signings of Claudio Echeverri, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and most significantly £59m man Omar Marmoush all arrive to try and turn City’s underwhelming season around after a so-far feeble defence of their title and an equally disappointing start to life in the Champions League under the new format.

Manchester City’s spending, amid an ongoing case over alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, have come under the microscope greatly in recent weeks, but Pep Guardiola has hit back at critics and claimed that is the simple part and parcel of being an elite football club while pointing out that many other teams have spent significantly more over the last two decades.

He said: “People are saying: Man City are spending again! Every successful team in this country in the last two to three decades spent more than the other clubs. In last five years we are 11th in net spend. All clubs who have access to go to the market, every club”

The Sky Blues’ spending has definitely caught the eye this month, and many are curious to see just what impact the likes of Marmoush make on the team’s season. But how does Manchester City’s net spend over the last five years compare to the rest of the Premier League? Here’s all you need to know, courtesy of data from Transfermarkt.
