Manchester City endured a disastrous night on Wednesday as they crashed out of the Champions League and saw their hopes of another treble come to an end.

After drawing 3-3 last week at the Bernabeu, the sides once again played out a tied game in the second leg at the Etihad, with the score finishing 1-1 after 90 minutes. Extra-time didn’t provide a winner and the game was settled from the spot via a shootout.

After Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic missed their penalties, Antonio Rudiger netted the decisive spot-kick to ensure Madrid advanced.

Having produced 33 shots and amassed 68 percent of possession, it was a hugely disappointing evening for City, as they surrendered their European crown. But there is added reason for concern as three players were forced off with injury.

Erling Haaland, who was seen limping, didn’t make it back out after extra-time, with Julian Alvarez replacing him. Kevin De Bruyne and Manuel Akanji were also replaced in the 112th minute and Pep Guardiola revealed after the game that all three substitutions were due to injury.

“Erling and Kevin and Manu asked me to go out. They could not continue,” he said.

De Bruyne was seen holding his hamstring and looked in discomfort after indicating to the bench he couldn’t carry on. It’s a particularly concerning update given De Bruyne missed the first five months of the season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring in August.

Meanwhile, Jokso Gvardiol also appeared to be holding his groin in the final minutes of added-time, but managed to finish the game.

The concerning injury news comes amid a busy end to the season for City, who face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend. The Premier League champions then travel to Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest next week.
