There’s even a chance that City could have secured a first-place finish before they play again, given an Arsenal loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday would mean the Gunners would be unable to catch Pep Guardiola’s side.

This will be the Catalan’s fifth Premier League triumph and the club’s seventh overall, and there have been some suggestions that the 2022/23 edition could be Guardiola’s greatest City team yet. They may well end the season by becoming just the second-ever side to win the treble of the title, FA Cup and Champions League.

The introduction of Erling Haaland, while not always a seamless process, has seen City develop a ruthless scoring streak, especially given his partnership with Kevin De Bruyne. But players like John Stones, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish have also shone for the would-be champions this term.

The 4-0 victory over Real Madrid just emphasised how perfectly honed Guardiola has got this City team, who combined penetrative, precise passing with driving runs and irrepressible work off the ball, to totally overwhelm the Champions League kings for 90 minutes.
