City will ‘continue’ with their ‘talks’ with İlkay Gündoğan as they look to tie down the midfielder to a new deal, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. The 32-year-old, who is a Germany international with 66 caps under his belt so far in his career, sees his current contract expire at the end of this season and is due to become a free agent, with La Liga giants Barcelona linked with a swoop.

Gündoğan has been playing his football with the Sky Blues since 2016 and has made 301 appearances for them in all competitions, chipping in with 58 goals. The former VfL Bochum, FC Nürnberg and Borussia Dortmund man has won the title five times now.

Coach eyed

City coach Enzo Maresca has ‘turned down’ Southampton, as per a report by Football Insider. The Saints turned to Guardiola’s number two following their relegation to the Championship but he has opted to stay where he is, with Swansea City’s Russell Martin now poised to move to St Mary’s instead as the Hampshire outfit plot an immediate promotion back to the top flight next term.

Maresca has also previously had coaching stints at Ascoli, Sevilla and West Ham and was City’s U23s coach for a year from 2020 to 2021 before landing the Parma job. However, his time in Italy didn’t go to plan and he was welcomed back in Manchester with open arms again last year.
