Man City 'consider triggering' £100m release clause of PSG and Real Madrid transfer target

Man City are reportedly considering a £100m move for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The 18-times capped Brazil international became an immediate success after joining the Magpies in a £40m deal from Lyon in January 2022 as he played a lead role in helping Eddie Howe’s side avoid relegation with five goals and one assist in his first 17 appearances for the club. His first full season on Tyneside proved to be overwhelmingly positive as the Magpies broke into the top four of the Premier League and reached their first major cup final since 1999 - although thoughts of silverware were ended by a 2-0 Carabao Cup Final defeat against Manchester United.

The summer brought speculation the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were both keen to tempt the Magpies into selling the midfielder - but Guimaraes signalled his intent to commit to the club and penned a new five-year deal in October last year.

Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, he said: “I’m so happy here. It's a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That's my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here.

"I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it's happening. We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my team-mates, I am so proud of them all. I'm proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans. 

"The city believes again and it's unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It's amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years.”

The reported presence of a £100m release clause in the new agreement has meant speculation over Guimaraes’ future has never been far from the headlines and Football Transfers have now claimed City are ‘exploring the prospect’ of a move for the Brazilian as they look to strengthen their midfield options during the summer. Chelsea have also been linked with the midfielder.
