Manchester City have confirmed James McAtee has joined Sheffield United on loan for the remainder of the season.

The highly rated youngster played a significant role in pre-season and made a cameo appearance in the 3-0 opening-day win over Burnley. City had contemplated keeping McAtee in their squad for the 2023/24 campaign, but feel the opportunity to play regular Premier League football is an important step in the midfielder’s progression.

McAtee had attracted interest from other top-flight sides yet has opted to return to Sheffield United, where he spent last season. The 20-year-old scored nine league goals in 37 appearances for the Blades as they secured promotion from the Championship. He also played a significant role in the club’s FA Cup run to the semi-final stage, but was ineligible to face his parent side City at Wembley.

McAtee could even be involved in Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Everton, a meeting between two sides who are yet to pick up a point this season. The loan move back to Bramall Lane does not include a buy clause, and City never considered such a promising talent leaving permanently

McAtee’s short-term deal is expected to be the final business of a busy transfer deadline day at the Etihad. Matheus Nunes’ £53m arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers was announced in the morning, with Tommy Doyle heading the other way on loan, with an option to buy.

Cole Palmer also signed for Chelsea for a fee of £40m, with an additional £2.5m in bonuses, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton on loan, with an obligation to buy if the south-coast club gain promotion this season.
