Manchester City beat Arsenal 4-1 in a huge top-of-the-table Premier League encounter on Wednesday, that leaves Pep Guardiola’s side in pole position to retain their title. The victory means City are just two points behind Arsenal but have played two fewer games, meaning they’re heavy favourites to finish top.

For an hour at the Etihad, City were superb, with Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland habitually interchanging passes as they terrorised the Arsenal backline. It was De Bruyne who got the ball rolling after seven minutes when he netted past Aaron Ramsdale, who had a busy first half in the away goal.

After saving the Gunners on several occasions, the Arsenal keeper could do nothing to stop John Stones’ header at the end of the first half to make it 2-0. De Bruyne doubled his tally in the early stages of the second period, with City’s levels dropping as they moved three goals ahead.

Rob Holding did score late on but there was never any hope of a comeback, while Haaland, who missed five good chances on Wednesday, grabbed a fourth in injury-time to set a new Premier League record of 33 goals in a 38-game season.

It was a feisty affair however, with Ruben Dias and Bukayo Saka clashing the first half, before Jack Grealish and Thomas Partey were involved in a coming together. After the full-time whistle, emotions spilled over a little as Ben White and Erling Haaland exchanged words, resulting in an on-field melee.
