Manchester City 2-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Match ratings and Man of the Match

Manchester City secured top spot in their champions League group with a commanding 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The hosts dominated the first period and only some last-ditch defending and excellent saves from Keylor Navas denied Pep Guardiola’s men from taking a deserved lead.

But momentum switched after the break, with PSG netting against the run of play within minutes of the restart, courtesy of Kylian Mbappe.

The Parisians then enjoyed a short spell on top, with Lionel Messi looking to launch counterattacks, before City again turned the tide and grabbed a vital equaliser through Raheem Sterling.

Gabriel Jesus then secured the points with a late winner to overcome Mauricio Pochettino’s men and means they can’t be caught at the top of Group A.

Despite the one-goal victory, City were excellent in the group-stage game, dominated possession throughout and created the vast majority of chances at the Etihad.

Ederson- 6

Didn’t have many saves to make, although his quick reactions narrowed the shooting angle for Neymar in the 74th minute when he really should have scored.

Kyle Walker- 7

Closed down a Kylian Mbappe shot in the early stages, during a rare PSG chance in the first half. His excellent run and pass set up Sterling’s opener.

John Stones- 6

Looked comfortable in possession all night, although he did present PSG with their best chance of the first half when he was dispossessed on the halfway line. Still a solid display from the England international.

Ruben Dias- 6

Put in a great block on a Lionel Messi shot and, expect for the brief spell when PS were on top, gave a calm and assured performance.

Joao Cancelo- 7

Spent more time in the opposition half than his own, but was partly at fault for the PSG goal when he got pulled inside and allowed Mbappe too much space. Contributed to City’s first-half onslaught.

Rodri- 8

So cool in possession against the busy PSG midfield of Idrissa Gueye, Ander Herrera and Leandro Parades. Offered important protecion for Stones and Dias and his perfectly timed pass picked out Walker for Sterling’s equaliser.

Ikay Gundogan- 8

Led the press for City and his quick use of the ball helped with Guardiola’s men’s fluidity. Came so close to scoring in the first half when he hit the post. Rarely misplaced a pass all night and helped to kill the game for City in the latter stages.

Oleksandr Zinchenko- 7 (off 54)

Flitted between midfield and attack in a rare outing through the middle. An intelligent display in Guardiola’s complicated system. The Ukrainian forced Marquinhos into a vital first-half block but was hooked nine minutes into the second period to make way for the more offensive Gabriel Jesus.

Riyad Mahrez- 8

A magnificent display from the Algerian who drifted inside repeatedly from the right flank, ghosting past Nuno Mendes. Also worked back to decent effect and put in several tackles on Mbappe and Neymar. Our Man of the Match on an excellent night for City.

Bernardo Silva- 8

Popped up all over the pitch for the hosts. Linked the play and drifted into spaces in between the defence and attack. His assist for Jesus’s goal was sublime and the nonchalance of his touch back fooled the entire PSG defence.

Raheem Sterling- 6

The ex-Liverpool man has found a decent streak of form again. He played an important part for City from the left flank and poked home their equaliser at a vital time in the game.

Gabriel Jesus (on 54)- 7

His introduction helped change the game for Guardiola and Co. He gave City more of a focal point up front and the Blues looked much more dynamic with him in the side. Jesus slotted home in 76th minute to secure the win for the Premier League champions.
