Liverpool handed massive injury concern ahead of Premier League title race vs Man City and Arsenal

Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Andy Robertson after the defender was forced off during Scotland's 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Robertson lasted just 37 minutes of the game at Hampden Park before limping off, having attempted to play on with what appeared to be a twisted ankle. He was on the receiving end of a strong challenge by Trai Hume and looked visibly concerned walking off the pitch.

The 30-year-old has already missed a large chunk of Liverpool's campaign after picking up a shoulder injury in October. He will return to Liverpool for further assessment ahead of their trip to Brighton this weekend.

“He’s just come off the pitch, let the injury take its course," Scotland manager Steve Clarke said after the defeat. “He’ll go back to his club and they’ll assess it and hopefully it’s not too serious.”

The potential loss of Robertson would be a huge blow for Liverpool in the Premier League title race, with fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold also currently out injured. The Scottish left-back missed 22 games between October and December, with a combination of Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez filling in.

Young prospect Conor Bradley is filling in at right-back but the absence of both starting full-backs would be a major issue for Jurgen Klopp, who places so much importance in the positions. It also leaves them thin in both areas and any other injuries could be fatal to their title hopes.

Liverpool currently sit second in the Premier League, with just a single point keeping them ahead of Manchester City. Arsenal are top on account of a superior goal difference over the Anfield club but the title race looks set to go to the wire.

City host Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday, with Liverpool's slightly earlier kick-off time handing them the chance to go top, even if only for a few hours. Both City and Arsenal welcomed injured players back from international duty, with Kyle Walker and John Stones both doubts for Pep Guardiola's side this weekend while Bukayo Saka withdrew from England duty before a ball was kicked.
