Kevin De Bruyne has revealed he felt his hamstring ‘snap’ in the final of the Champions League on Saturday.

The Manchester City midfielder, who has been struggling with a niggle over recent weeks, suffered the problem in the first half of the historic 1-0 win over Inter Milan and tried to carry on, but had to be replaced after 36 minutes. For De Bruyne, it was a repeat of the 2021 final as he was forced off with injury in the loss to Chelsea, but two years on, City secured the victory in his absence.

Speaking after the game, De Bruyne explained that he sustained what appears to be a serious injury. "It’s been a hard two months for me. I’ve had a lot of issues with my hamstring and it snapped,” City’s no.17 told BT Sport.

“It is what it is, I did everything to be ok and it’s a shame because I felt really good in the first half an hour. I thought I was doing well, but the team is good enough and we won."

“It’s amazing,” he added, on winning the Champions League. “We’ve been working so long for this and to be part of this, the history for the club and everything we did as a team, I think we fully deserve it. We’ve not lost in the Champions League this year. It wasn’t the best game, but finals are always difficult and now it’s time to celebrate.”

Asked about achieving the treble for just the second time in the history of English football, De Bruyne replied: “It’s huge and the amount of games you have to play and the level of consistency is high, but it’s amazing and we should enjoy it.”

Rodri’s goal after 68 minutes proved to be the only one of the night in Istanbul as City claimed the Champions League for the first time, while Pep Guardiola earned his third winners’ medal.
