Pep Guardiola confirmed Josko Gvaridol underwent his Manchester City medical on Friday ahead of his transfer from RB Leipzig.

City agreed a £77.5m deal to sign Gvardiol on Wednesday, with the club paying a fee just under the record for a defender, the £80m that Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019.

Speaking in Friday's pre-match press conference ahead of the Community Shield on Sunday, the City boss was asked for the latest on the club's transfer policy, and revealed that the Gvardiol is close to being confirmed as the latest signing.

"Regarding Gvardiol - what a beautiful surname he has! He is doing a medical test and everyone knows he is here. Hopefully we can finish the deal in the next few days," said the Catalan.

The arrival of Gvardiol means City will have six centre-backs, but Guardiola insisted that is not too many options at the heart of defence. "The season is so long. Many many games," he said.

"I'm happy," Guardiola added, when asked about the size of his squad heading into the new season. "All the teams, not just City, the reality in this period one week of work helps a lot but there is 11 months. Don't get injured, train day by day and week by week and game by game the players will get what we need."

Gvardiol is not expected to be involved at Wembley for the top-flight's traditional curtain raiser, as City meet Arsenal in the Community Shield. However, the Blues could hand a debut to summer signing Mateo Kovacic, while Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva are expected to be involved despite speculation continuing to surround their futures.
