Joao Cancelo: Man City issue statement after defender is assaulted at his family home

The Portugal international revealed he’d been attacked on Thursday.

Manchester City have said they are ‘shocked and appalled’ after full-back Joao Cancelo was attacked at his family home on Thursday.

The 28-year-old took to social media following the incident, to reveal the injuries he had sustained, with a visible cut above his right eye and around the socket.

"Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family," he wrote in the Instagram post.

"When you show resistance, this is what happens. They managed to take all my jewellery and leave me with my face with this state.

“I don’t know how there are people with such meanness. The most important thing for me is my family and, luckily, they are all ok. After so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more.”

Following the news, City made a statement late on Thursday night.

“We are shocked and appalled that Joao Cancelo and his family were subjected to a burglary at their home this evening during which Joao was also assaulted,” said the club.

“Joao and his family are being supported by the Club and he is helping the police with their enquiries as they investigate this very serious matter.”

Cancelo joined City in 2019 and has played 26 games in all competitions this season, scoring three goals.

The Portugal international played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday as the champions beat Brentford 1-0 and extended their gap at the top of the Premier League table to eight points.
