Just three points separate the Premier League’s top five sides at present.

Jamie Carragher has said Liverpool could be Manchester City’s biggest challengers for the 2023/24 Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s champions moved a point clear at the top of the table on Sunday after a pulsating 4-4 draw against Chelsea. Liverpool, who travel to the Etihad after the international break, are in second place in the table, level on points with Arsenal. Next is Tottenham Hotspur, who have lost the last two matches, and then fifth-place Aston Villa, who trail City by three points in the table.

The tight affair at the league’s summit has led to hope of a drawn-out title race between multiple sides this season, something which hasn’t been seen in the Premier League for many years, certainly during Guardiola’s time in Manchester.

Liverpool have been City’s closest rivals over recent years, and for that reason, Carragher feels they could be the side best place to push City once again.

“Why shouldn’t Liverpool go there [the Etihad] and believe they are in the title race? Let’s be honest, they are the ones who have really pushed Man City over the years,” he said on Sky Sports. “It is a new Liverpool team but they could still be Manchester City’s biggest challengers because they have players and a manager who have been there before.”

Despite that, Carragher feels City are favourites to secure top spot once again. “I still have got that feeling that Manchester City are a level above Liverpool and Arsenal right now, but that might change over the next four or five months as those teams grow, certainly Liverpool as they have a lot of new players,” said the former Reds defender. “But City… it feels like we haven’t seen the real City and they’re still top of the league.

“When you look at that league table, it’s a great league table in that City haven’t moved away from everybody. I know it’s early in the season, but that result was good for the league. I always like a league table where there’s only a point between the team, and as the season goes on those gaps will grow.”
