‘I trust the club’ - First Man City player gives his view on legal battle v Premier League

John Stones was also asked about reports of Txiki Begiristain’s departure at the end of the season.

John Stones has said he ‘trusts’ the people around him at Manchester City following the legal battle against the Premier League, and reports of Txiki Begiristain’s departure at the end of the season.

The outcome of City’s Associated Party Transaction (ATP) case was announced on Monday, with both the club and the Premier League claiming victory. City claimed in the aftermath that the ATP rules imposed by the Premier League were proved to be ‘unlawful’ and ‘violated UK competition law’.

Meanwhile, the league said in their statement that the majority of City’s challenges had been rejected, while adding that a ‘small number of discrete elements’ of the laws needed to be changed.

The fallout that has followed has seen City’s general counsel Simon Cliff email all 19 top-flight clubs claiming the Premier League’s statement was ‘misleading’, while the league have since accused City of bullying tactics.

In what has been a crazy week, reports have also emerged that director of football Begiristain will step down at the end of the season after 12 years at City. His exit also raises questions about the long-term future of manager Pep Guardiola.

With a pause in the club football season, there has been little chance for any significant figures from City to comment publicly on the news; that was until John Stones faced the media on Wednesday night.

The defender will captain England in Thursday’s Nations League fixture against Greece and had was asked at a pre-match press conference about Begiristain and City’s ATP case.

“The honest truth is no, it doesn’t worry [me],” he said “I am very much someone if I cannot control it, I don’t give it the headspace or attention. That might seem a bit wrong in some ways, but that is how I deal with it.

"At the end of the day, it is out of my hands and I put a lot of trust in the club and the people around me are good. I think I have quite a simple mindset towards things that I can control and what I can affect and I don't think it has done too bad so far or maybe I haven’t got the capacity to deal with all those things so I choose to put them to one side.”
